Magnavox Odyssey 2

The true successor to the Magnavox Odyssey. Releasing in February 1979 for the US, the Odyssey 2 was one of the “major players” of the 2nd generation of consoles, although it may have been in last place for this realm. Specifications-wise, the Odyssey 2 has an Intel 8048 CPU, a 100×200 resolution capable of outputting 16 colors, and around 312 bytes of RAM across all the varying chips accessing it.

Operating Systems (Intel 8048)

Odyssey BIOS

The BIOS reads the keyboard and joystick, displays character graphics and can even manage a simple clock.

It's not an OS, but it can do a few things that are of interest for a console of this age, namely the clock.

Version & Revision Guide

For general information, see the Game Console Revisions Overview.

Versions

There are two versions of this console, arranged chronologically.

“Odyssey 2 (detachable controllers)” (1978-????)

Both controllers are connected to ports at the rear, enabling removal at any time. Furthermore, the video out plug is restricted to only the OEM RF modulator.

“Odyssey 2 (hardwired controllers)” (????-1984)

The controllers have been changed to a hardwire, although they can be easily removed from the motherboard, as they are not soldered. Alongside this, the video out plug is now compatible with other RF modulators, such as the Atari 2600’s modulator.

There are no revisions within either version. No taglines could be assigned.
