Almost nothing is detailed about this by the OP, but with research, it may be possible to figure out the model of this, as the location of this validator is known. That probably isn't necessary though, as these devices are quite common across many public transport systems around the world.

I was able to simply extract the CAB file, rename the conents and copy it directly

Must be controlled with VNC, despite having a video output on the device itself. Latency is minimal, luckily. Unsurprisingly, it has an underlying Windows CE system, so the true EOP is running this system and making it “open”, in whatever way that is done.
